The West Bengal government has extended the summer vacations in all government schools across the state till May 31, 2026. The decision has been taken
considering the ongoing heatwave conditions, an education department official said. The government's move aims to shield students from the scorching heat, which may affect their health negatively. The orders issued by the School Education Department will be applicable to primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions, except those located in hill areas. As per the updated schedule, the summer vacations, which began on May 11, will now conclude on May 31, 2026. Students will return to their classes after 21 long days on June 1, 2026. The academic calendar, which outlined a brief break, has been modified as per the government's directives. The extension aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students amid extreme weather conditions. Notably, the order is compulsory for publicly owned schools; private ones may exercise their discretion in extending holidays or continuing classes. West Bengal is experiencing intense heat, with peak temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, schools in Delhi have also gone on an almost 2-month summer break. However, the schools are conducting remedial classes for Classes 9, 10, and 12 students from May 11 to 23, 2026, to fortify key concepts and enhance overall learning outcomes.
