George Clooney and his wife Amal have officially become French citizens, along with their two young children, according to French government documents
published over the weekend. A notice in France's official gazette on Saturday listed the entire family – George, Amal, and their seven-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, among the latest people granted French nationality. The Oscar-winning actor and director, who remains a US citizen, has spoken openly in recent months about wanting a quieter life for his kids away from the spotlight of Hollywood. In a February interview with the New York Times, Clooney explained that the family's main home is now a farm in rural France. "Growing up in Kentucky, all I wanted to do was get away from a farm, get away from that life," he said. "Now I find myself back in that life. I drive a tractor and all those things. It’s the best chance of a normal life." He shared similar thoughts with Esquire in October, saying he had worries about bringing up children in Los Angeles. "I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood," Clooney told the magazine. "I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France, they kind of don’t give a sh*t about fame." The star added that he didn't want his children constantly followed by paparazzi or compared to other famous kids. Clooney has long pushed for more privacy for his family. Back in 2021, he wrote an open letter asking media outlets not to publish photos showing his children's faces, citing safety concerns. France is known for having some of the strictest privacy laws in the world. It's against the law to take or publish photos of people in private spaces, reveal personal details like home addresses, or even photograph celebrities in public unless it's directly tied to their work. Amal, a prominent British-Lebanese human rights lawyer, is now a citizen of the country too. Neither George nor Amal has made a public statement about the citizenship news yet, but the move fits with everything the couple has said about giving their twins a more grounded upbringing.
