The Uttarakhand government has arrested 14 people under the 'Operation Kalanemi', which was launched to nab fake "babas" allegedly involved in cheating
and converting people's religion. The operation, which began in July, aimed to arrest these fake babas across Uttarakhand who lure people into the scandal. Addressing a press conference, Inspector General of Police (Crime and Law and Order) Nilesh Anand Bharane stated that under "Operation Kalanemi", the police have questioned more than 5,500 individuals, and preventive action has been taken against 1,182 of them. He said that 14 people have been arrested, including Bangladeshi citizens. Moreover, Nepali-origin people were also found hiding their identities. Here's what police revealed
The inspector general of police said that some of the cases involved girls with terror links, religious conversion, while in some cases, people changed their names on social media to convert them.
"Some babas were arrested, including those concealing their identities and crimes and have been hiding for years. Some Bangladeshis have been arrested here. Some Nepali-origin individuals, living as babas, were caught hiding identities and creating fake documents," IGP Bharne told news agency ANI.
He stressed that some people come from the border states, forge documents, and "exploit" government schemes as well, adding that the Uttarakhand Police are taking prompt action against them under Operation Kalanemi.
As of now, 2704 people have been verified in Haridwar, while three have been arrested. In Dehradun, 922 people have been verified and five arrested, according to a press statement issued by Uttarakhand's government.
What is Operation Kalanemi?
The Uttarakhand Police launched the operation, named after Kalanemi, the demon son of Ravana's uncle Maricha, it aims to retain the "sacred image of Devbhoomi."
"Kalanemi" was disguised as a "sadhu" who tried to stop Lord Hanuman from taking the "Sanjeevani Booti". Later, he was reborn as Lord Krishna's uncle, Kansa, in the Mahabharata.
The operation has been successful so far, as the Uttarakhand police have questioned thousands of people and made arrests accordingly.
