After Donald Trump's bid to win the Nobel Peace Prize failed, the White House asserted that the Nobel Committee had "placed politics over peace". In a statement
on social media platform X, a White House official said that Trump will "make peace deals, end wars and save lives". "President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will. The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace," White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung said.
The US President had repeatedly sought the coveted award since his first term, most recently telling United Nations delegates late last month: "Everyone says that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize." But his renewed bid this year went flat after the Norwegian Nobel Committee named Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as its laureate for 2025.
Associated Press, quoting experts, reported that the Norwegian Nobel Committee factors in the contender's contribution on the durability of peace, the promotion of international fraternity and the quiet work of institutions that strengthen those goals for the award.
Who Is Maria Corina Machado?
In its official statement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said it chose Machado for her "tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."
"The Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 goes to a brave and committed champion of peace – to a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness," the committee said.
It added that Machado "has been a key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided," and praised her for bringing together rival factions to defend "the principles of popular rule."
