What is the story about?
New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) Double-decker buses will be introduced in Delhi this month to connect major tourist attractions including the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya,
the National War Memorial, and Bharat Mandapam. Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra announced that the service aims to enhance the sightseeing experience for both domestic and international tourists, with operations expected to commence around February 20.
Service Details and Features
The service will feature two electric double-decker buses manufactured by Ashok Leyland, provided through a corporate social responsibility initiative. Initially stationed at the Okhla depot, the buses will now be operated by the tourism department.A senior official indicated that the route has been largely finalized, and evening tours are also in the planning stages. The buses are designed to accommodate over 63 passengers, excluding the driver, and are well-suited for the urban landscape of Lutyens' Delhi, avoiding issues with low overhead wires or tree canopies.
Tour Itinerary and Pricing
The planned itinerary will commence from the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya and will include stops at prominent locations such as Bharat Mandapam, the National War Memorial, the new Parliament complex, and Dilli Haat. The fare is set at Rs 500 for adults and Rs 300 for children aged six to twelve years. A guide will accompany the tours to provide insights into the historical and cultural significance of each site.Despite discussions about targeted tours focusing on marketplaces and heritage sites, officials believe the current model will be more effective for historical attractions.
Historical Context of Double-Decker Buses in Delhi
Double-decker buses were once a common sight in Delhi, operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation as 'Suvidha' buses before they were phased out in 1989 due to the age of the fleet. The reintroduction of these buses is seen as a revival of a nostalgic mode of transport for the capital's tourism sector.Officials have requested a formal inauguration from the chief minister’s office to officially launch the service.
