State-run oil marketing company, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is looking to enhance household LPG safety by expanding its portfolio of
leak detection solutions with Internet of Things (IoT)-based technology. In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Dhruv Kapil, Executive Director – LPG, HPCL shared that the OMC plans to introduce smart LPG safety devices capable of continuous monitoring, instant leak alerts and remote notifications, offering consumers greater convenience and improved safety in their kitchens. Kapil further shared about the HPCL's newly introduced HP Navya, India's first on-demand LPG cylinder delivery service through a quick commerce platform, through Swiggy Instamart . Here are the edited excerpts: Q: How HP Navya is placed differently from regular LPG cylinders? Should consumers expect to pay a premium? HP Navya is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant composite cylinder designed to offer customers a safer and more convenient alternative to conventional steel cylinders. With premium brand experience, express delivery, enhanced convenience, safety and portability. Navya offers a different value proposition for New India who wants quick, fast and robust services and are willing to pay premium for the same. While the product incorporates advanced composite technology and premium features, HPCL will strive to ensure that it remains competitively priced and delivers superior value to customers. Q: Are there plans to introduce smart cylinders or digital safety monitoring solutions? We currently market LPG leak detection sensors for domestic kitchens through our allied distributor channel partners. Going forward, we aim to strengthen and expand this portfolio by leveraging IoT-based technologies. These smart solutions will provide features such as continuous monitoring, instant leak alerts, remote notifications, and enhanced safety management, delivering greater convenience and peace of mind to consumers. Q: Can existing HP Gas customers easily switch to HP Navya, or will they need to follow a separate registration process? Yes, existing consumers can also easily enrol in Navya through HP PAY or Instamart. They need a valid Proof of Identity (POI) to complete the process. The onboarding is simple, convenient, and can be completed in just a few easy steps, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience. Q: How durable are these cylinders compared to steel cylinders, and what is their expected lifespan? Composite cylinders are manufactured using advanced fibre-reinforced composite materials, making them corrosion-free, lightweight and highly durable. They are designed and tested in accordance with applicable BIS/PESO norms. To ensure continued safety and performance, these cylinders are required to undergo mandatory quality testing every three years, as prescribed by the applicable standards. Q: How do you see the role of authorised distributors evolving in a digitally enabled fulfilment ecosystem? These developments will further strengthen the serviceability, operational efficiency and responsiveness of our existing distributors, who are backbone of HPCL's LPG distribution network. Digital fulfilment models, including quick commerce and online platforms, are intended to complement the distributor ecosystem. Distributors will continue to play a critical role in customer onboarding, inventory management, safety compliance, last-mile fulfilment and after-sales support while leveraging digital channels to enhance customer convenience and on-demand LPG availability.
