Mumbai woke up to another rain-lashed morning on Monday, with heavy showers pounding the city for the third straight day, leaving roads flooded and office-goers
grappling with long traffic snarls. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the city under a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rain until Tuesday. LIVE Updates: Mumbai On Red Alert As Heavy Rainfall Continues Across Mumbai, viral videos captured waterlogged streets in Borivali, Chembur, Santa Cruz, Worli, Navi Mumbai and Colaba, where cars were seen wading through waist-deep water and pedestrians struggling to find safe passage. Many office-goers took to social media to share clips of jam-packed highways and local train stations, highlighting the daily struggle brought on by the monsoon.
Local trains, the city’s lifeline, also faced disruptions with delays of nearly 10 minutes on Central and Harbour lines, while road commuters reported being stuck for hours in traffic as low-lying areas remained inundated.
The IMD has cautioned that Mumbai and its suburbs could see very heavy showers with gusty winds, particularly during the night, with temperatures expected to remain steady between 24°C and 27°C. The orange alert issued over the weekend has already triggered severe flooding in parts of the city, where more than 200 mm of rain was recorded in a single day.
The downpour has not spared the rest of Maharashtra either. Orange and yellow alerts are in place for several districts including Thane, Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara and Raigad, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in parts of Madhya Maharashtra until Tuesday. In Marathwada, districts like Beed, Latur and Nanded remain on high alert for thunderstorms and lightning.
Mumbai will continue to witness heavy rainfall until August 20, with light showers forecast through August 23, according to the IMD.
