Srinagar: An avalanche struck the Sonamarg tourist resort in Jammu and Kashmir late Tuesday night, but officials confirmed that no lives were lost. The
incident occurred at 10:12 pm in Ganderbal district, in central Kashmir. A massive avalanche in Sonamarg was captured on CCTV, showing snow sweeping over buildings, though officials reported no casualties. Authorities had issued a high-danger avalanche warning for the district on Monday. Over the past 24 hours, Sonamarg and much of the Kashmir Valley experienced moderate to heavy snowfall.
Srinagar airport saw all 58 scheduled flights, including 29 arrivals and 29 departures, canceled on Tuesday due to unsafe runway conditions, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. While the valley, including Srinagar, recorded light to moderate snow, higher-altitude areas received heavy snowfall, transforming popular tourist resorts like Sonamarg, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam into picturesque winter wonderlands.
