The very Millennials and Gen Z who drove the cord-cutting revolution and abandoned cable for streaming have, ironically, emerged as some of the biggest
cinema-goers. The generations that popularised “Netflix and chill” are proving that streaming did not kill the appetite for the big screen. If anything, it has changed what makes a trip to the cinema worth it. The box office is offering some evidence of that appetite. Five films have crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office this year: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But perhaps the most interesting part of the cinema revival is who is showing up. Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is now the most active cinema-going generation. According to Fandango's 2026 Moviegoing Trends & Insights Study, 87% of Gen Z respondents said they had seen at least one film in a cinema in the past 12 months, compared with 82% of Millennials, 70% of Gen X and 58% of Baby Boomers. The younger generations are not only going to cinemas more often, they are approaching the experience differently. For Gen Z, the cinema can be a social destination, a chance to get together with friends and experience something collectively rather than simply another place to consume a film. It also offers something increasingly rare in their digital lives: two uninterrupted hours away from their phones and the endless scroll. As author and speaker Gary Vaynerchuk wrote, “In 2006, smartphones and social platforms didn’t exist as they do today and didn’t have any of the market share. Now, the pendulum has swung the other way and phones have gotten so much market share that we’re starting to unplug.” There is also something comforting about the cinema for those looking for a solo experience. Going to a restaurant alone can sometimes feel like an announcement that you have nobody with you. A cinema is different. In the darkness of the auditorium, anonymity becomes part of the experience. Nobody needs to know whether you arrived with friends or by yourself. You can sit among strangers, disappear into the story and spend some two hours entirely in your own company without feeling lonely or awkward. And perhaps that is part of the appeal. While everyone is living a performative life, the cinema offers a rare space where nobody is watching you. You are simply watching something else, and the Gen Z is hanging on to this appeal. Of course, the films themselves matter. It helps that audiences have had a run of films that feel worth leaving home for. Streaming has made films incredibly accessible, but accessibility can also make entertainment feel disposable. And going to a film becomes an event where people are dressing up, planning nights around it, booking premium formats or simply wanting to see it before the internet spoils it - and this is where cinema suddenly feels like the place where the experience belongs. Gower Street Analytics, a UK-based film data and insights specialist, projects the 2026 global box office to reach $34.7 billion, a 5% increase over 2025 and the highest worldwide gross since 2019. The momentum has been visible throughout the year. In June, the global box office reached $2.81 billion, while the combined international and domestic markets, excluding China, recorded their strongest June of the decade at $2.58 billion. The second quarter was also the strongest Q2 since 2019, with $7.85 billion in box-office revenue, according to Gower Street. For Hindi filmgoers in India, the picture is not very different. According to the Ormax Bollywood Audience Report (TOBAR) 2026, 57% of the Hindi box office comes from audiences below the age of 30. That proportion rises to 70% for first-day box office, making the 15-30 age group a critical audience segment for film marketing. Interestingly, the same generation that gets motivated and influenced by social media is also helping drive audiences towards cinema halls. Films are romanticised, clipped and aesthetically repackaged across platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, creating a digital buzz that can translate into theatrical curiosity. A film no longer needs to be advertised only through a traditional trailer. Sometimes a single scene, a romantic edit, a soundtrack or a particularly beautiful frame is enough to make someone want to see the whole thing. TikTok has become a treasure trove for film recommendations, while Letterboxd, the social network for film lovers, has more than 30 million users worldwide and more than 3 million followers on Instagram. A significant proportion of its active users are between the ages of 18 and 24. For a generation that grew up with social media, talking about a film can be almost as important as watching it. This is where the cinema experience becomes part of a much bigger cultural loop. You see the film, post about it, rate it on Letterboxd, share an edit on Instagram, send a scene to a friend, argue about the ending on TikTok and then watch everyone else do the same. The film becomes an integral part of your social bonding. For Gen Z, going to the cinema is also about staying on the pulse of popular culture. Watching the film everyone is talking about means being able to understand the memes, references, edits and online discourse that follow. There is another contradiction here. Social media has often been blamed for shortening attention spans, making people restless and giving them an endless appetite for bite-sized content. But, here's the surprise, that the same generation is willing to sit through a two-and-a-half-hour film when the experience feels worthwhile. Perhaps the issue was never that Gen Z could not pay attention. Perhaps they simply needed something worth paying attention to. Cinema also gives young people something that streaming cannot quite reproduce: the feeling of being part of a crowd. A joke landing across a packed auditorium, an entire room gasping at the same moment, people screaming during a horror film or singing along to a song creates a kind of collective memory. You can watch the same film alone at home, but you cannot recreate 500 strangers reacting to it at the same time. There is also the simple ritual of it. Deciding what to watch. Getting ready. Meeting friends outside the theatre. Buying popcorn. Finding your seats. Taking a picture of the poster. Sitting in the dark as the lights go down. For a generation accustomed to having entertainment arrive instantly, the little bit of effort involved can be precisely what makes it feel special. Streaming has not disappeared, of course. Nor is Gen Z abandoning it. Quite the opposite. The generation that made “Netflix and chill” part of everyday language still knows how good it feels to watch something from bed. But perhaps streaming has done something unexpected to cinema. It has raised the bar. When almost every film can eventually come to your living room, a cinema ticket has to buy you something more than access to the film. It has to offer atmosphere, scale, community, escape, conversation or simply the feeling that you were there when something happened. The Netflix generation is not choosing between the sofa and the cinema. It is learning when each one matters. And sometimes, when the lights go down and hundreds of phones disappear into the darkness, the most digitally connected generation discovers the oldest pleasure of all: sitting in a room with strangers and watching a story unfold together.
