Days after several journalists were assaulted and attacked during the peaceful protests led by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Kolkata, the Kolkata Police
on Monday (July 27) arrested two people in connection with the violence, taking the total number of arrests to 16. Condemning the attack on a journalist, members of the press fraternity marched from the Press Club to Dharmatala on Saturday. The march came a day after the CJP protest in Kolkata allegedly turned violent when a mob hijacked the demonstration and attacked a journalist. Demanding strict action against those responsible, the journalists urged Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to take cognisance of the incident. They asserted that attacks on journalists and the press are unacceptable under any circumstances and called for the safety and protection of media personnel.
Police Reconstruct Crime Scene
Moreover, an eight-member team also went to meet the governor of West Bengal and submitted a letter.
As part of the investigation, five of the arrested persons were taken to Dorina Crossing in Esplanade on Monday for reconstruction of the sequence of events. The accused were seen walking barefoot to the spot under police escort as investigators recreated the incident.
One of the police officers said that the investigation is progressing based on evidence, including video footage, digital material and witness statements. More arrests will be made if further involvement is established.
West Bengal CM Condemns 'Brutal Attack' on Journalists
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has condemned the "brutal attack" on police personnel and journalists during the NEET protests in Kolkata on Friday.
CM Adhikari met with the injured at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and shared details in a post on X. The Chief Minister instructed authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for those injured during the protests and initiate strict action against those responsible.
The state government has invoked the recently enforced West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, in connection with the case.
