Kolkata Metro: Kolkata is set to witness a historic moment in its transport landscape as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three long-awaited
metro lines, including the final missing link of the East-West Metro, on 22 August. The announcement was confirmed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who extended invitations to BJP functionaries in Bengal, calling it a major milestone for the city ahead of Durga Puja.
A Long Wait Ends for East-West Metro
For years, the 16.6 km East-West Metro, stretching from Sector V in Salt Lake to Howrah Maidan across the Hooghly, has remained incomplete due to the delayed 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch, stuck in the subsidence-hit Bowbazar area. With its inauguration, the line will finally run its full length, giving commuters seamless east-to-west connectivity for the first time.“This is the city’s biggest infrastructure project and it will finally come alive in its entirety,” said an engineer of KMRC, the agency implementing the Rs 10,000-crore project.

Kolkata Gets First Airport-Metro Link
Alongside the Green Line’s completion, two more lines will be launched: the first 7 km stretch of the Yellow Line (Noapara to Airport) and Phase II of the Orange Line (4.4 km Ruby to Beleghata/Metropolitan). The Yellow Line opening is especially significant, as it marks Kolkata’s first-ever metro-to-airport connectivity, allowing flyers from Howrah, central Kolkata, and suburbs to reach the airport with ease. The network integration is expected to be a game-changer, with the East-West Metro linking with the existing Blue Line at Esplanade, giving commuters a smoother experience and multiple interchange options.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar called it a “historic gift for Bengal before Durga Puja,” while officials say the developments will bring a massive boost to public transport and ease congestion across the city.
