An intense heatwave across several parts of India has pushed state governments and education departments to announce extended summer vacations, revise
school timings and issue fresh advisories for students. Multiple media reports suggest that schools across Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other states are either shutting early or altering schedules as temperatures continue to rise beyond 44°C in several regions. Authorities in many states have cited student safety and worsening daytime heat conditions as the key reasons behind the revised academic calendar. Delhi-NCR Schools Witness One of the Longest Breaks
According to various media reports, schools in Delhi-NCR are set to remain closed from May 11 to June 30, with reopening scheduled for July 1, resulting in nearly 50-57 days of summer break in several institutions. Government schools under Delhi’s Directorate of Education have already begun vacations, although remedial classes for Classes 9, 10 and 12 are continuing in limited morning shifts.
In Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad, some private schools have reportedly reduced school hours, shifted to online assignments or ended classes before peak afternoon heat. District administrations are also monitoring weather forecasts for any further revisions.
Several States Revise Vacation Schedule Amid Heatwave
Apart from North India, states including Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh announced early summer vacations due to severe heatwave alerts. Odisha advanced school holidays from April 27 following recommendations from the School and Mass Education Department.
Meanwhile, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh schools began vacations from April 24 and are expected to reopen around mid-June. Chhattisgarh announced one of the earliest extended breaks, with schools closed from April 20 to June 15.
West Bengal has also extended summer vacations for government and government-aided schools till May 31 due to rising temperatures in several districts.
