New Delhi: The Delhi High Court recently issued notice on a plea filed by an 85-year-old resident of Nizamuddin West against conversion of a public park
into a party lawn and illegal encroachment. Justice Mini Pushkarna sought replies from Nizamuddin West Association, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Government within four weeks after the 85-year-old's plea. The plea alleged that Nizamuddin West Association has illegally encroached and converted a public park into a party lawn and is using it for commercial purpose causing nuisance and pollution which is in violation of laws, relevant rules etc and because of which, the petitioner and her family members are being adversely affected. The petition also urged for an interim order restraining Nizamuddin West Association and its office bearers from organising weddings/parties/functions in the said public park and using it for commercial purpose in any manner whatsoever in violation of any rule, laws, bye laws and regulations.

Advocate Sumit Gehlot, appearing for the resident, argued before the court that despite repeated complaints, the authorities have failed to act forcing her to approach the court.
The counsel further underscored that the petitioner’s age and medical condition, while submitting that late-night events, loud music, firecrackers and illegal construction have caused serious health and environmental issues.
