What is the story about?
Elon Musk has lashed out at the European Union a day after his social media platform X was hit with a USD 140 million penalty. Accusing Brussels of overreach,
Musk said that the EU "should be abolished" and that power must be shifted back to member states. "The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people," he posted on X, which he acquired in 2022. "How long before the EU is gone? AbolishTheEU," he added.
Why Did X Face The Fine?
According to the European Commission, action was taken against X for breaching transparency rules under the Digital Services Act. As per an AP report, the EU stated that X was found to have violated three different disclosure requirements.
Regulators stated that X's blue check system amounted to a "deceptive design" that could expose users to scams and manipulation. They also stated that X did not provide adequate access to its advertising database or to public data for researchers.
The platform had earlier received warnings over insufficient action against harmful content.
