At least four people, including a 10-year-old girl, have been injured after Russia launched a wave of drones and missiles against Kyiv in the intervening
night of Wednesday and Thursday, Ukrainian officials say. The attacks damaged an education facility in the Ukrainian capital and caused fires and damage to buildings and infrastructure in the surrounding Kyiv region. Explosions were reported in central Kyiv at about 00:30 local time on the night of 16-17 September, according to Kyiv Independent journalists. Ballistic Missiles Hit Kyiv The attack intensified shortly after 02:00, when ballistic missiles were reported over the capital. Kyiv Independent War Editor Chris York said there were "two big explosions in quick succession, then another after about a minute". About eight further explosions were reported at around 02:21, he said, occurring "one after another". An air-raid alert was declared across much of Ukraine, including briefly in the western Lviv region. The Kyiv City Military Administration said at least four people had been injured in the attack, including a 10-year-old girl.
Education Facility Damaged
Ukraine's State Emergency Service said a fire broke out at an education facility in Kyiv following the Russian strike.
Emergency crews extinguished the blaze. "The facade and windows of a four-story building of a higher education institution in the Holosiivskyi district were damaged," the service said. The full scale of the damage in Kyiv was not immediately known.
A separate fire was reported at a private property in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, east of the capital. The Kyiv Regional Military Administration said a utility building, agricultural equipment, semi-trailers and a car were damaged.
Homes and commercial infrastructure were also damaged in the Fastiv district, officials said.
The overnight attack came just two days after another Russian strike on Kyiv. On 15 September, a gas station in the capital's Darnytskyi district was hit at about 06:00 local time, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
One person was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died, Klitschko said. At least 12 other people were injured in that attack, according to local authorities.
Russia has repeatedly launched drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure during its war in Ukraine.
