What is the story about?
Mumbai/Pune: If you’ve ever complained about traffic in Pune or Mumbai, you’re not wrong — both cities battle daily gridlock. But according to the latest
TomTom Traffic Index 2025, there’s still a clear winner when it comes to how fast the city actually moves during rush hour. And the answer is: Mumbai is faster than Pune in traffic. The TomTom report, which tracks commuting patterns and congestion levels globally, shows that while Pune and Mumbai remain among the world’s most congested cities, they still fare better than Bengaluru — which has now climbed to become the second most traffic-congested city globally, behind Mexico City.
Mumbai vs Pune: The Key Speed Difference
The clearest comparison between the two cities comes from their average speed during peak traffic hours:- Pune average speed: 18 kmph
- Mumbai average speed: 20.8 kmph
In simple terms, Mumbai moves around 2.8 kmph faster than Pune — a difference that matters massively during daily commutes.
So, Which City Is Faster?
Based purely on TomTom’s average speed data: Mumbai is faster than Pune in traffic.Even though Mumbai is known for high vehicle density and packed arterial roads, the city’s traffic flow appears to move more steadily compared to Pune, where bottlenecks and choke points often slow down average speed.
Despite Being ‘Faster’, Both Cities Remain Globally Congested
TomTom’s global ranking still places both cities in the top 20 most congested cities in the world, showing the scale of the traffic crisis in urban India:
- Pune: 5th most congested city globally
- Mumbai: 18th most congested city globally
So yes, Mumbai is faster — but neither city is actually “smooth” to drive in.
How They Compare to Bengaluru
The report also makes one thing clear: Pune and Mumbai are still moving quicker than Bengaluru, even though they remain heavily congested.
In 2025, Bengaluru recorded:
- Rush-hour average speed: 13.9 kmph
- 10 km travel time: 36 min 9 sec
- Annual time lost: 168 hours (around 7 full days)
So while Pune and Mumbai struggle, Bengaluru’s roads are operating at a much slower pace overall.
