A candid rant by a local driver from Sikkim has struck a nerve online, shining a spotlight on the darker side of tourism in hill regions. The video, now
circulating widely on social media, features the driver venting about an unpleasant experience with a group of tourists whose idea of a vacation clashed sharply with the serenity of the mountains. According to the driver, a group of 15 tourists had hired two vehicles for their trip but spent much of the journey drinking rather than appreciating the landscape. He claimed several passengers were consuming and even mixing alcohol inside the cars, while others behaved irresponsibly throughout the ride. Instead of enjoying the slow, scenic drive on winding mountain roads, the group repeatedly complained that the trip felt boring. The constant chatter, complaints and reckless behaviour visibly frustrated the driver, who said he was prioritising safety while navigating the narrow roads. His blunt outburst in the video quickly caught attention online, where he remarked that if the tourists were so desperate for excitement, they might as well “jump from the mountain.”
Explaining his state of mind, the driver said, “My mind is mess since morning. A group of 15 people went in two cars and all of them were drunk. Some were mixing alcohol inside the vehicle, others were doing something else. I was driving calmly and they kept saying, ‘This isn’t fun, this isn’t fun.’ I thought, if you want fun, then jump from the mountain.”
The clip was shared on Instagram with the caption, “A Sikkim frustrated Driver shares Experience with the Tourist,” and quickly triggered strong reactions in the comments section.
Many users sided with the driver. One wrote, “He is saying the truth.” Another commented, “The majority of drivers don’t drink and they hate the smell of it. I don’t know why people get intoxicated while travelling. How will they enjoy? On top of that, they will drink alcohol in someone else’s car and even vomit.” A third reaction simply read, “Ban alcohol in the hills.''
