Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has unveiled the State Education Policy (SEP) on Friday at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium in Kotturpuram, Chennai.
This State Education Policy has been developed as an alternative to the National Education Policy (NEP). This State Education Policy (SEP) has been drafted by a committee set up by the state government. This committee is chaired by retired High Court Judge Justice D Murugesan, who submitted the report to Stalin-led government in 2024. The policy was since awaiting release and implementation. The policy has been released months after Stalin has been protesting against the Centre-promoted New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The DMK government has often termed NEP 2020 as a policy "against social justice". Stalin has alleged that NEP is BJP's way of attempting to impose Hindi on the Southern state. Tamil Nadu has refused to implement the NEP. In May, the Tamil Nadu government had filed a plea in the Supreme Court over the alleged withholding of about Rs 2,200 crore in central funds, which it linked to its refusal to adopt the NEP. The plea requested the court to declare that the NEP 2020 and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme are not binding on the state unless it formally agrees to them.
