Zohran Mamdani, the newly-elected New York Mayor, quoted Jawaharlal Nehru's iconic 'Tryst With Destiny' speech, in his victory address. Addressing a sea
of supporters at his campaign headquarters, Mamdani said, "A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance."
Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the first Muslim Mayor of New York, defeating Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent Andrew Cuomo in a closely-watched race.
After months of intense campaigning, Mamdani emerged as the victor, becoming not only New York's first South Asian mayor but also the youngest mayor in more than a century.
Born in Uganda to parents of Indian descent, Mamdani will also be the first naturalised immigrant to become the mayor since Abraham Beame in the 1970s.
New Yorkers turned out in record numbers Tuesday, with the city's Board of Elections saying that over 2 million had cast their ballot before 9 pm.
US President Donald Trump reacted, issuing a warning to New Yorkers, saying, "If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!"
