India's festive retail market is gearing up for a major shopping boom this Dhanteras, with nationwide business activity projected to exceed Rs 1 lakh crore
on Friday. Gold and silver purchases are expected to make a substantial contribution, accounting for more than Rs 60,000 crore, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). Despite elevated prices of precious metals, buyers appear keen to maintain their traditional Dhanteras shopping habits. Jewellery, silver coins and auspicious gifts continue to attract customers, highlighting the importance of the festival for India's retail and jewellery sectors. The latest estimates suggest that expensive gold has not significantly weakened festive sentiment. Instead, consumers are adjusting their shopping choices to accommodate higher prices while continuing to participate in the annual buying tradition. Gold And Silver Purchases Expected To Drive Dhanteras Business According to CAIT, the festival is likely to generate more than Rs 1 lakh crore in overall trading activity across the country. Gold and silver transactions alone are projected to cross Rs 60,000 crore, making precious metals a major contributor to the expected festive turnover. Dhanteras traditionally witnesses increased demand for gold, silver and other valuable items, as purchasing these products is considered auspicious. Jewellery stores and retailers are therefore expecting considerable customer activity during the festival. The All India Jewellers and Goldsmith Federation (AIJGF) has reported a noticeable preference for lightweight ornaments, silver coins and traditional gift products this festive season. With gold prices remaining significantly higher than last year, customers are exploring more affordable jewellery options. Retailers have particularly observed interest in 14-carat and 18-carat gold ornaments, which allow consumers to purchase jewellery without spending as much as they would on heavier pieces. Silver products are also receiving attention from festive shoppers. Coins, decorative accessories and other traditional items are among the purchases attracting customers. The demand extends to auspicious decorative products and figurines featuring fish, tortoises and elephants. Such items are commonly purchased during the festive period and remain popular gifting choices. Gold Prices Remain Higher Than Last Year Precious metal prices continue to influence purchasing decisions this Dhanteras. Although gold rates have witnessed a slight correction over the past week, prices remain considerably above their levels during the corresponding period last year. At the time of reporting, 24-carat gold was trading at Rs 1,41,840 per 10 grams. Compared with last year, gold prices have increased by approximately 20 per cent. This price difference has encouraged buyers to reconsider their budgets and preferences. Rather than abandoning gold purchases altogether, many consumers appear to be opting for lighter jewellery and smaller-ticket products. The current business projections are based on estimates shared by CAIT, while the final picture of Dhanteras sales is expected to become clearer after retailers assess transactions across different markets. The AIJGF has indicated that it will release a detailed statement by the evening, providing an update on consumer response and sales performance nationwide. The assessment is expected to offer further insight into demand for gold ornaments, silver coins and other festive merchandise.
