PHILADELPHIA (AP) — On Monday, travelers at Philadelphia International Airport encountered an unexpected sight: a line of cheesesteaks longer than any
security queue. This event celebrated National Cheesesteak Day and aimed to establish a new Guinness World Record. Organizers reported that they successfully created a record-setting line of 1,291 cheesesteak sandwiches, exceeding the previous record of 500. The achievement highlights Philadelphia's rich culinary heritage and the city's association with this iconic dish.
Record Achievement
Clarence LeJeune, representing MarketPlace PHL, which manages airport concessions, expressed pride in the accomplishment. “We went for the world record for the longest cheesesteak in history,” he stated. “Today we accomplished that goal here in Philadelphia.”
Culinary Significance
The cheesesteak, a staple of Philadelphia cuisine since the early 1900s, has become synonymous with the city, much like its sports culture. LeJeune emphasized the importance of this dish to Philadelphia's identity.
Event Execution
Volunteers in black aprons meticulously assembled cheesesteaks along tables between Terminals B and C, filling rolls from silver buckets as travelers passed by. After the record verification, the sandwiches were distributed to travelers, airport staff, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees, many of whom are currently working without pay due to the government shutdown.
Community and Humor
LeJeune humorously noted that while there are few strict rules regarding cheesesteaks, one guideline stands out: “You don’t ask for Swiss cheese.” This remark references a past incident involving a political figure that resonated with locals.
Guinness World Records Guidelines
Michael Empric, a Guinness World Records adjudicator, clarified that all food used in record attempts must either be consumed or donated. “In this case, they are going to TSA agents who definitely could use some lunch,” he remarked.
