Vice President Election Result: NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan has won the Vice Presidential election, defeating the opposition INDIA Bloc’s nominee B Sudarshan
Reddy. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, while Sudarshan Reddy received 300 votes. Out of a total of 767 votes cast, 752 were declared valid and 15 were invalid. Notably, 767 members of the 781-member electoral college exercised their vote (including one postal ballot). Of these, 15 ballots were declared invalid. The voting began at 10 am on Tuesday and concluded at 5 pm. More than 760 MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, participated in the polling. How many first-preference votes did CP Radhakrishnan receive?
Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, while speaking at a press conference, said, “NDA candidate and Governor of Maharashtra, CP Radhakrishnan, received 452 first-preference votes. He has been elected as the Vice President of India. The opposition’s Vice Presidential candidate, Justice Sudarshan Reddy, secured 300 first-preference votes.”
In the Vice Presidential election, a total of 13 Members of Parliament abstained from voting. This list included seven from the Biju Janata Dal, four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one from the Shiromani Akali Dal and one independent MP.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut claimed on Tuesday that the decision of the Biju Janata Dal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi and Shiromani Akali Dal to stay away from the Vice Presidential election is a setback for the ruling BJP at the Centre.
President Murmu, PM Modi Congratulate VP Elect
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated CP Radhakrishnan on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. "Your decades of rich experience in public life will contribute significantly to the nation’s progress. I extend my best wishes to you for a successful and impactful tenure," President Murmu posted on X. "His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse," PM Modi wrote.
"Congratulations to Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji on being elected as the Vice President of India. I firmly believe that your sagacity as a leader who has risen from the grassroots of the society and profound knowledge about administration will help us in bringing out the best in our parliamentary democracy to serve the marginalised. I extend my warmest wishes to you for your journey as the custodian of the sanctity of the Upper House," posted Home Minister Amit Shah on X.
VP Election
The voting for the vice-presidential election was held on Tuesday. The voting in the elections began at 10 AM and concluded at 5 PM. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote. Among the early voters were Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Kiren Rijiju. Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh, BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav were among others who came to cast their vote.
The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprises a total of 788 members - 245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha. The 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to vote in the election. Members of Parliament are not bound by party whips to vote in the vice presidential election, which takes place under a secret ballot system.
