With exams approaching, many influencers, social media pages, and podcasters have started making videos to tap students’ attention and share tips and psychological
tricks for the upcoming exams. We found a similar video that has sparked a debate online. An Instagram page that has over 37k followers and claims to be the curator of India’s first education-focused podcast has posted a video focusing on exam evaluation. The podcaster and a guest can be seen facing each other in the video. When asked what the first thing an examiner notices in an answer sheet is, the guest shared his opinion that the examiner sees how one has started writing the answers. “It’s not important which section you attempt first; what’s important is how you start the section,” he said. He further suggests that candidates attempt the sections they know the answers to first and answer the first 10 questions correctly and neatly. He believes that when an examiner notices a cut on the first page or sees wrong answers on the first page, it creates a bad impression. “The examiner then checks in a hurry with the impression that the student is below average. But if the first 10 questions are correct, the examiner sees where to deduct marks — because of this, he gives marks in every section as the answers are absolutely correct.” The internet is divided on this. Many users called this his perception and said it is not true. One user commented, “I disagree. Every examiner is a teacher, and he or she finds a way to give as many marks as the student can achieve.” A person claiming to be an examiner wrote, “This is not true. Even I am an examiner. Whatever the child writes, we make a point to give marks.” Another user shared her experience from when she was a student: “Bakwas, in 10th marks paper me mere first page pe hi cutting ho gayi thi, but I secured 96 marks (I managed to secure 96 marks in the Class 10 Maths exam even after scratching the first page).” Many users commented and tagged the guest, urging him not to mislead students.
