The Centre on Friday (July 17) appointed senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, succeeding Satish Golcha, who had been heading
the force since August 2025. A 1994-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, Kumar was serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before being elevated to the top post in the national capital. In an official order, the Ministry of Home Affairs said Kumar will assume charge as the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with immediate effect and continue in the role until further orders. "With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS, is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official order. According to the order, outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha has been directed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for his next assignment after formally handing over charge to his successor. A 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, Golcha took over as the Delhi Police Commissioner on August 22, 2025, after serving as the Director General of Tihar Jail.
Who is Anurag Kumar?
Anurag Kumar is a 1994 batch IPS officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre, hailing from Uttar Pradesh.A direct recruit through the UPSC Civil Services Examination, he holds a BE degree and has accumulated over three decades of service. He is currently on central deputation, serving with the Intelligence Bureau. Over his career, Kumar has been decorated with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2010) and the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016), the latter being one of the highest honours awarded to police officers in India.
He was most recently elevated to the rank of Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, a post upgraded on an in-situ basis by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
