Bengaluru: When people think about moving to Bengaluru, the first thing that often comes to mind is the monthly expenditure. This is one reason many hesitate
to shift to India’s IT hub, despite it being a metro city full of opportunities. In contrast, a 24-year-old Reddit user recently shared her monthly expenses, which were far lower than many would expect. According to her, Bengaluru’s cost of living largely depends on how you manage your lifestyle. “Bangalore is honestly not that expensive,” she said. The woman detailed her expenses after living in the city for a year. “Posting this because people often say, ‘Bangalore is insanely expensive,’ which is true only if you let it be,” she wrote on Reddit. Quirky Suggestion
“Bangalore is honestly not that expensive if you’re in control of your lifestyle. What surprised me is that some of my friends living just 3 km away spend around Rs 45,000 per month. The biggest difference? Their 1BHK rent alone is Rs 26,000,” she added. She ended her post with a quirky tip: “And the biggest tip to save money is, sleep till 12 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.”

The post received mixed reactions. One commenter noted, “You might be the only person in B’luru spending 1.5x more on food than rent.” The user replied, “I would love to start cooking, but it would be time-consuming. But yeah, food is something we can’t really compromise on.”
The post also sparked a debate about the quality of living. One user said, “I used to spend Rs 40K -Rs 5.5K more than you on rent, ₹2K more on food, and ₹5K more on discretionary expenses. The quality-of-life difference is massive with just this ₹13K more. It’s not always about saving money; just focus on earning more.”
Meanwhile, some people admit they leave Bengaluru within months of moving. One person wrote, “I am leaving Bengaluru after 3 months. Very, very expensive. I hardly have any money left after paying rent, food, and transport. Shifting to Kolkata or Hyderabad for a higher salary, lower rent, and good public transport makes more sense. Here, no Rapido bike, no metro, daily commute 4 hours. Weather is amazing, that’s it.”
