New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) The Delhi government has announced plans to prioritize the comprehensive redevelopment of Old Delhi, known as the 'Walled City',
aiming to transform it into a prominent tourism hub, as stated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
Gupta, who recently took charge of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC), emphasized that restoring the historical and cultural heritage of Old Delhi is a central commitment of her administration.
Revitalizing Historical Heritage
Gupta described Shahjahanabad as more than just a locality, highlighting it as a vital symbol of Delhi's rich historical and cultural legacy. To enhance safety and visual appeal, the government plans to relocate overhead electrical wires underground in the narrow lanes of Old Delhi.
Addressing Traffic Congestion
The government is also focusing on mitigating traffic congestion in the bustling market area. Gupta announced that a comprehensive traffic management plan will be developed, along with the construction of multi-level parking facilities.
Balanced Development and Heritage Conservation
Gupta stated that Old Delhi is a historic residential area with lanes that reflect centuries of heritage. The government aims to achieve balanced development while preserving this legacy. The conservation of historic 'havelis', 'katras' (traders' complexes), and 'koochas' (narrow lanes) will also be prioritized for upgrading.
Reviewing Previous Development Projects
The chief minister mentioned that past development projects will be reassessed to further promote Old Delhi as a major tourism destination. Notably, the Delhi government had previously redeveloped the main road of Chandni Chowk.
Additionally, Gupta indicated that previous redevelopment plans for the Jama Masjid area, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, and the beautification of the road stretch from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate will be evaluated. She assured that the government would ensure uninterrupted road construction, repair, and improvement.
Formation of Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation
The Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation was established on May 1, 2008, by the Delhi government as a Special Purpose Vehicle aimed at facilitating coordination among various agencies to expedite development works in the Old Delhi area.
