Amid Afghanistan’s announcement to suspend trade with Pakistan, farmers and traders across Pakistan are reportedly facing mounting distress. As the trade halt
begins to disrupt the supply of essential goods, a video of a Pakistani farmer breaking down while selling cauliflowers has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the human cost of the decision. The video, widely shared on platforms including X and Instagram, shows a farmer visibly overwhelmed as he laments the rising prices of food items. One X page, identified as @NewsAlgebraIND, posted the clip with the caption, “Afghan government has announcement to halt trade with Pakistan. HUGE loss for Pakistan !! Pakistani farmers and traders angry with Govt and Army.” In the footage, the man is seen leaning backwards onto a pile of cauliflowers arranged on a vegetable cart. He beats his chest and cries aloud while speaking about the soaring prices of vegetables. As he gestures in distress, several cauliflowers fall off the cart. Towards the end of the video, the farmer appears completely overwhelmed, he picks up a cauliflower, shouts about its price once again, and smashes it onto the ground, underscoring the severity of his emotional breakdown. Note: Times now could not verify the authenticity of the viral video.
As the clip spread online, it triggered mixed reactions from viewers. While some users responded humorously, others pointed out that the ''consequences of political decisions are rarely felt by those in power.'' As one comment noted, it is “not the officials in power suffering, but always the farmers suffering.”
One user sarcastically wrote, “Big blow. Pakistan’s own policies coming back to hurt farmers and traders.”
Another commented, “I think this person is very much depressed because of the announcement of Afghan government to halt trade with Pakistan, initially he is not only the man—there may be several thousands facing the same type of situation, and it’s impact on Pakistan too.”
A third user said, “Afghanistan halting trade is a major economic blow to Pakistan, exposing the cost of strained regional ties and leaving farmers and traders to pay the price.”
Another remarked, “A country born out of hatred and perpetuating the same for almost eighty years will have to face worse such hatred, causing misery to the common man.”
According to a PTI report, traders have been struggling to import fruits and vegetables from Afghanistan following the trade suspension, leading to a sharp rise in prices and increasing pressure on both sellers and consumers.
