What is the story about?
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved Phase 5A of the Delhi Metro project, a major expansion valued at Rs 12,015 crore, marking another significant
step in strengthening public transport infrastructure in the national capital. Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would further enhance connectivity and ease daily commuting pressures across Delhi and its surrounding regions.
16 km New Metro Corridor with 13 Stations
Under Phase 5A, the Delhi Metro will add 16 kilometres to its network, featuring 13 new stations. Of these, 10 stations will be underground, while three will be elevated, reflecting a mix designed to navigate dense urban areas and existing infrastructure.
Briefing reporters on the Cabinet’s decisions, Vaishnaw said the project has been planned with a three-year execution timeline. Once completed, the expansion is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity and reduce dependence on private vehicles in high-traffic corridors.
Metro Network to Cross 400 km
With the completion of Phase 5A, the Delhi Metro’s operational network will cross the 400-kilometre mark, reinforcing its position as one of the largest and most extensive urban metro systems in the world.Officials say the expansion aligns with the government’s broader push for sustainable urban mobility, lower carbon emissions, and faster, more reliable public transport for millions of daily commuters.
