What is the story about?
Kolkata Weather: After several days of bone-chilling winter, the sharp fall in temperature has finally stalled in South Bengal — and a warming trend is
now on the cards. The Alipore Met office has said temperatures will begin rising from Sunday itself, with the mercury expected to go up by 2–3°C over the next two days, even though dense morning fog may continue to trouble parts of the region. With Saraswati Puja on January 23 — just five days away — the outlook suggests Kolkata residents may miss the usual festive-day shiver this time.
Temperature set to climb from Sunday
According to the weather department, the gradual rise in temperature will start from Sunday. While fog will dominate the early hours, daytime conditions are expected to remain mostly clear, and the overall chill will reduce. The Met office forecast indicates:
- 2–3°C rise in the next two days
- Another 2°C jump after Tuesday
In short, by the time Saraswati Puja arrives, Kolkata is likely to feel noticeably warmer, with winter’s bite easing across the region.
Saraswati Puja may not feel ‘wintery’ this year
With temperature levels steadily climbing, the Met office suggests that the traditional January cold during Saraswati Puja could be missing this year.If the forecast holds, the city may experience pleasant winter weather rather than a freezing spell, especially during daytime celebrations.
How cold is it right now in districts?
While the cold wave has weakened, pockets across Bengal are still experiencing sharp chill — especially during the night and early morning.
Here are the key temperature updates:
- Darjeeling recorded the lowest minimum temperature in North Bengal at around 3.5°C
- In South Bengal, Shantiniketan continues to feel freezing, with the mercury below 10°C
- Bankura and Kalyani recorded minimum temperatures of 9.5°C
- Kolkata and nearby districts are hovering around 12–13°C
On Saturday:
- Kolkata’s minimum temperature was 13.1°C, which is 1.4°C below normal
- The maximum temperature touched 24°C
Fog warning issued for multiple districts
The Alipore weather office has issued a fog alert for several districts across both North and South Bengal. Fog conditions may intensify on Sunday and Monday, particularly in the morning hours.
Districts under fog warning include:
- Birbhum
- Murshidabad
- Nadia
- East Burdwan
- West Burdwan
- Hooghly
- North 24 Parganas
Commuters are advised to remain cautious, especially during early morning travel, as fog may reduce visibility.
North Bengal rain chance next week
The forecast also hints at a shift in North Bengal weather. The Met office has said scattered rainfall is possible in parts of North Bengal next week, though no major disruption is expected as of now.
Meteorologists say the changing weather pattern is largely being driven by back-to-back Western Disturbances.
As per Alipore Met department sources:
- A Western Disturbance entered north-west India on Friday
- Another fresh Western Disturbance is expected to arrive on Monday
These systems are triggering fluctuations and are likely to keep temperatures moving upwards in the coming days.
