What is the story about?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway on April 14, marking a major step in improving road connectivity in North
India. The new expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities and ease traffic on busy routes.
Travel Time To Reduce Sharply
The 210-kilometre-long expressway will cut travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from around 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours. This is likely to benefit daily commuters, tourists, and those travelling to Uttarakhand’s hill stations. The project is also expected to reduce congestion on the heavily used Delhi-Meerut corridor, offering a faster and smoother alternative route.
The expressway will begin near the Akshardham Temple in Delhi and pass through key towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli, and Saharanpur, before reaching Dehradun. It will connect Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand through a high-speed corridor designed for better traffic flow and reduced travel delays.
Speed Limit And Road Design
The six-lane access-controlled expressway has been designed for high-speed travel, with a speed limit of 100 kmph for cars. It includes seven interchanges, two rail overbridges, and 10 major bridges. In addition, 14 wayside amenities will be available for travellers, improving safety and convenience during long journeys.
A key highlight of the project is a 12-kilometre elevated stretch passing through the Rajaji National Park. This section has been specially designed to ensure that wildlife movement is not disturbed.
To further protect animals, the project includes two 200-metre-long elephant underpasses and six dedicated animal crossings. These features aim to reduce accidents and allow safe movement of wildlife across the region.
Boost To Tourism And Pilgrimage Routes
The expressway will also improve access to major religious and tourist destinations. A spur road will connect the highway to Haridwar, and it will also link with the Char Dham Highway project. This is expected to make travel easier for pilgrims visiting important sites in Uttarakhand and nearby areas.
Project Cost And Significance
The expressway has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 12,000 crore. Officials say the project will not only improve connectivity but also support economic growth by reducing travel time and transport costs. Once opened, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to become a key route for travel in North India, offering faster, safer and more efficient connectivity between major cities and tourist destinations.
