What is the story about?
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — On Monday, travelers at Philadelphia International Airport encountered an unexpected sight: a lengthy line of cheesesteaks rather than
the anticipated long security lines. Organizers announced that they achieved a new Guinness World Record for the longest line of cheesesteak sandwiches, featuring 1,291 sandwiches lined up in a departure hall to celebrate National Cheesesteak Day, exceeding the previous record of 500 sandwiches.
Record-Breaking Cheesesteak Line
Clarence LeJeune of MarketPlace PHL, which manages airport concessions, stated, “We went for the world record for the longest cheesesteak in history. Today we accomplished that goal here in Philadelphia.”The cheesesteak, a culinary icon originating in Philadelphia in the early 1900s, is widely regarded as the city's signature dish. LeJeune emphasized its significance, noting that it is “synonymous” with Philadelphia, much like its sports culture.
Community Engagement
Cheesesteaks were assembled by volunteers wearing black aprons along tables set up in the corridor between Terminals B and C, as they filled rolls from silver buckets while passing storefronts. After the record was officially certified, volunteers distributed the sandwiches to travelers, airport personnel, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff, who have been working without pay during the government shutdown.
Cultural Significance and Humor
LeJeune humorously remarked on the loose rules surrounding cheesesteaks, highlighting part of the “beauty of the experience.” He added, “You don’t ask for Swiss cheese,” referencing a controversial incident involving former presidential candidate John Kerry in 2003.Michael Empric, a Guinness World Records adjudicator, reiterated the importance of ensuring that all food used in record attempts is consumed or donated. “In this case, they are going to TSA agents who definitely could use some lunch,” Empric noted.
