Mumbai witnessed a shocking act of violence on Saturday evening when Alok Singh, a college professor, was brutally stabbed on platform number 1 at Malad
railway station. The attack occurred around 6 PM as a local train was arriving from Churchgate to Borivali, turning what should have been a routine commute into a fatal encounter. For Alok Singh, 33, a math and statistics professor at the Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics in Vile Parle, it was supposed to be just another day of navigating Mumbai’s crowded local trains - he was travelling from Vile Parle towards Kandivali. But an argument with a fellow passenger escalated into deadly violence. Police officials said that both men were traveling in the same train when the disagreement began over a petty matter. Suddenly while they were getting off, the accused whose identity is unknown, took out a sharp weapon and lunged at Alok, who had no chance to react, as per the eyewitnesses. He was stabbed in the stomach multiple times. The attacker then fled the spot, while Singh collapsed on the platform, clutching his stomach as he tried to stem the bleeding. After other commuters raised the alarm, railway police quickly took Singh, a Kandivali resident, to Shatabdi Hospital, where he was declared dead. DCP Sunita Salunke Thackeray of the Western Railway region confirmed the incident, stating, “The police have registered a case of murder and have launched an investigation.” Soon after, with the help of footage of CCTVs installed at the train station, Police arrested the accused. He has been identified as Omkar Shinde, 27. Omkar was arrested from Vasai station and has been brought to Borivali police station, where he is currently being interrogated.
'Very Calm and Polite'
One of the college’s teachers recalled that Singh had been teaching mathematics and statistics in the junior college section since 2024.
"He was a very kind soul, very calm and polite and never got involved in any kind of arguments or fights. In fact, he used to help resolve fights. This is absolutely shocking for us," said the teacher, noting that Singh had left the college on Friday evening at around 5.15-5.30 pm.
A relative of the victim described him as a simple man who never showed anger. "He got married only a couple of years ago and lived in Malad East with his wife. His father worked for BJP leader Rajnath Singh. His uncle was also a teacher. We are aghast at what has happened and want police to track down the culprit at the earliest." Local BJP leaders began visiting the hospital late into the night.
