A seemingly ordinary screenshot from a high-level G7 meeting has given social media users something very different to talk about - US President Donald
Trump’s missing video feed. Trump was among the leaders taking part in a virtual meeting hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, with discussions focused on the global energy situation and mounting pressure on diesel supplies. However, when a screenshot from the meeting surfaced online, it was Trump’s dark video tile that quickly caught attention. The image was shared on X by Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), who was also part of the virtual meeting. While several participants were clearly visible on camera, Trump’s tile showed only his name against a dark background. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Japanese Vice Minister Kazuya Endo were among those visible in the screenshot. Trump’s absence from the on-screen video feed, however, did not go unnoticed. Social media users soon began turning the otherwise routine meeting screenshot into a source of humour. Some jokingly speculated that the US President could have been taking a nap during the call. Others came up with a more light-hearted explanation, suggesting that he may have been avoiding the camera because of a possible “bad hair day”. The speculation remained firmly in the realm of online jokes. There is no evidence to suggest that Trump was asleep during the meeting, and the screenshot itself does not establish why his camera was not visible. It is also unclear whether Trump’s camera remained switched off for the entire virtual meeting or whether it was simply not active at the specific moment when Birol captured the screenshot. The online reaction came against the backdrop of a meeting dealing with a serious global concern: energy security. According to Birol, the G7 leaders discussed the pressure facing global energy markets, particularly concerns surrounding diesel supplies. The IEA chief said the agency presented options that G7 countries could consider to help stabilise energy supplies while also improving energy security over the longer term. The virtual meeting brought together senior leaders and representatives from the G7 and the European Union at a time when disruptions and uncertainty in global energy markets continue to remain a concern. For social media users, however, the policy-heavy discussion was briefly overshadowed by one simple detail in the meeting screenshot - Trump’s camera being off.
