New Delhi: In a significant political development, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing
an end to his nearly six-year-long association with the party. The resignation was formally accepted by BJP president Nitin Nabin on Friday. The move comes amid growing speculation about Annamalai's future within the BJP. Earlier reports had suggested that the former IPS officer was likely to make an important announcement regarding his political career, including the possibility of stepping away from the party. On Thursday, Annamalai had hinted at a major decision through a post on social media platform X. “Tomorrow at 12 Noon, I eagerly look forward to interacting with you all on social media to share my thoughts and have an open, heart-to-heart conversation,” he wrote, sparking intense discussion among party workers and political observers. The confirmation of his resignation follows a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on June 2. The meeting had further fuelled speculation about Annamalai's future in the BJP as reports of his possible departure gained momentum. Sources said Annamalai had already made up his mind about leaving the party and wanted to ensure that his exit took place on cordial terms. Before making his decision public, he reportedly met senior BJP leaders, including party president Nitin Nabin and Amit Shah, to discuss the matter. Political observers believe Annamalai may have been unhappy with recent developments within the Tamil Nadu BJP. His resignation comes months after Nainar Nagenthran took over as the state BJP president. The BJP's decision to revive its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is also believed to have contributed to dissatisfaction within sections of the state unit. During his discussions with the BJP leadership, Annamalai reportedly reviewed the party's performance in the recently concluded elections in Tamil Nadu. Sources said he shared his assessment of the reasons behind the party's disappointing results and highlighted several organisational and political challenges faced by BJP workers on the ground. While the BJP has accepted his resignation, there is still no official word from Annamalai about his future political plans. His upcoming interaction on social media is expected to provide more clarity on the reasons behind his decision and what lies ahead for him politically.
