As counting began for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections at 8 AM on May 4, the spotlight quickly shifted to Thalapathy Vijay and his newly formed party,
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Early trends indicated a strong performance by TVK, placing it ahead in multiple constituencies and reshaping the state’s traditionally bipolar political contest. Amid these developments, visuals surfaced on social media showing activity at Anna Arivalayam, the headquarters of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Chennai. According to reports, tents set up at the premises were being dismantled as early trends placed the party in a distant third position. In another widely shared clip, a DMK worker was seen breaking down, reflecting the mood among party supporters as initial numbers came in.
The contest in the state has primarily been a three-way battle between the DMK, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and TVK. While early trends suggested TVK taking the lead, both DMK and AIADMK appeared to be trailing, indicating a possible shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Vijay’s entry into politics has generated significant interest, especially among younger voters. With a massive fan following and strong public connect, his campaign has focused on issues such as employment, women’s safety, and urban infrastructure, positioning him as a potential disruptor in the state’s long-standing political order.
One of the key constituencies to watch is Perambur in North Chennai, a seat historically dominated by Dravidian parties, where Vijay is contesting. Meanwhile, Tiruchirappalli East (Trichy East), located in central Tamil Nadu and known for its diverse voter base, also remains crucial in shaping the overall outcome.
Political observers note that TVK is the first new entrant in years that could significantly alter vote shares and challenge the dominance of the two traditional powerhouses. If the early trends hold, the 2026 election could mark a turning point, potentially ushering in a new political phase in Tamil Nadu.
