Hyderabad: With the monsoon intensifying across Telangana, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has placed the entire state administration on high alert and
directed officials to ensure that the public faces no inconvenience during the rainy season. He warned that strict action would be taken against officials who fail to discharge their duties during emergencies. Chairing a high-level review meeting on monsoon preparedness at the Bodhi Pavilion of MCRHRD Institute, the Chief Minister reviewed the government’s readiness to tackle heavy rains and associated challenges. Senior officials from the Irrigation, Municipal Administration, Health, Police, Agriculture and Meteorological Departments attended the meeting.
Expressing serious concern over the disruption caused by heavy rains on June 9, particularly in Hyderabad and the Core Urban Region (CURE), the Chief Minister took exception to the severe traffic congestion witnessed in several areas, including Cyberabad. He criticized municipal, police and traffic authorities for failing to adequately alert the public despite advance weather warnings.
Revanth Reddy recalled that he had already issued clear instructions during a rain preparedness review held on June 1 and expressed displeasure over the lack of coordination among departments. He directed Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao and DGP CV Anand to identify and take action against officials responsible for lapses. The Chief Minister made it clear that there would be zero tolerance for traffic jams caused by administrative negligence.
Stressing the importance of field-level monitoring, the Chief Minister instructed personnel from Municipal Administration, HYDRAA, Traffic Police, Water Board and other departments to remain on the ground during rainfall events. He said police officials from Commissioners to constables must be visible on roads during heavy rains and added that he too would personally visit affected areas whenever necessary.
The Chief Minister also ordered the immediate filling of vacancies in the Traffic Department and directed officials to prepare a comprehensive report identifying waterlogging points, accident-prone stretches and traffic bottlenecks across the city.
Reviewing the power sector, Revanth Reddy expressed dissatisfaction over outages caused by fallen trees and directed electricity officials to restore supply without delay. Mobile transformers should be deployed wherever required, and all field staff must remain on duty during adverse weather conditions, he said.
On irrigation preparedness, the Chief Minister directed officials to implement stringent safety measures at all irrigation projects and ensure that engineers remain stationed at project sites throughout the monsoon season. He warned that engineers leaving project locations without permission would face strict action. He also instructed the Finance Department to immediately release funds required for repairs and maintenance of project gates.
With the agricultural season underway, the Chief Minister asked officials to focus on the uninterrupted supply of seeds and urea. He suggested distributing urea through Rythu Vedikas and directed local agriculture officers to closely monitor stocks and distribution. Farmers should also be educated about the eight fine varieties of paddy seeds recently announced by the Agriculture Department.
Reviewing drinking water supply and public health preparedness, Revanth Reddy instructed officials to prevent contamination of water sources during rains and ensure regular water quality testing. He directed the Health Department to stock adequate medicines and remain prepared for possible outbreaks of water-borne diseases. Sanitation workers were also asked to remain vigilant to prevent unhygienic conditions caused by stagnant water.
The Chief Minister instructed senior officials to maintain constant coordination among municipal, health, water supply, police, traffic, fire, HYDRAA and disaster management agencies to ensure a swift and effective response throughout the monsoon season. He reiterated that protecting public safety and minimizing inconvenience would remain the government’s top priority.
