New Delhi: Delhi woke up to a marathon downpour on Thursday, with rain drumming down for nearly eight hours and leaving the city drenched well beyond its
usual annual average. Between 2.30 am and 8.30 pm, the national capital recorded 92.5 mm of rainfall, the highest in a single day so far this year, as per a report by TIE. By the end of the day, the city’s rain gauge had crossed 818.1 mm, comfortably overtaking the annual average of 762.3 mm, and there’s still over a month of monsoon left. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the spell was caused by an interaction between moisture-laden monsoon winds and local winds, creating the perfect conditions for a sustained downpour. The result? Cooler weather for residents, with Thursday’s maximum temperature dipping to 27.7 degrees Celsius, a sharp 6.1 degrees Celsius below normal, while the minimum was 23.6 degrees Celsius, 3.2 degrees Celsius below normal. Independence Day weather: What to expect at Red Fort
If you’re planning to attend the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on Friday morning, don’t forget your umbrella. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with one or two spells of very light rain or thunderstorms in the morning and forenoon, followed by another spell of light rain towards the evening or night. Winds will be light to moderate, mostly from the east and southeast, at speeds of 10–15 kmph.
While the rain is likely to be light, the overcast conditions should help keep temperatures relatively comfortable for August. Friday’s maximum temperature is expected to hover between 31 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius, with the minimum around 23 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius.
