Top Indian Firms Lose Billions in Value

Amidst a bearish trend in equities, eight of India’s top-ten valued firms collectively lost Rs 2,24,630.45 crore in market capitalisation last week, according

to data compiled by Times of India. Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank led the slump, while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) bucked the trend with modest gains. The benchmark BSE Sensex dropped 1,497.2 points, or 1.84 per cent, fuelling the decline across heavyweight counters. Reliance Industries’ market cap shrank by Rs 70,707.17 crore to Rs 18.36 lakh crore, while HDFC Bank’s value fell by Rs 47,482.49 crore to Rs 14.60 lakh crore. ICICI Bank shed Rs 27,135.23 crore, Bharti Airtel dipped Rs 24,946.71 crore, and LIC lost Rs 23,655.49 crore in valuation. Other major losers included State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance and Infosys, which together erased nearly Rs 30,000 crore from their market worth. In contrast, TCS gained Rs 11,125.62 crore to touch a valuation of Rs 11.15 lakh crore, while HUL rose by Rs 7,318.98 crore to Rs 6.24 lakh crore, offering a silver lining amid the downturn.
