ClickUp Layoffs: US-based productivity software company ClickUp has announced a major round of layoffs as it accelerates its transition toward artificial
intelligence-driven operations. The company’s CEO, Zeb Evans, confirmed that 22 per cent of the workforce would be affected, describing the restructuring as part of a broader transformation rather than a cost-cutting exercise. According to a company blog published in 2023, ClickUp employed more than 1,000 people. The latest layoffs, therefore, mark one of the company’s biggest organisational overhauls since its rapid growth phase. Sharing the update on X, Evans wrote, “Most savings from this change will flow directly back into the people who stay. We’ll be introducing million-dollar salary bands.” He further added, “If you create outsized impact using AI, you’ll be paid outside of traditional bands.” The announcement reflects a growing trend in the tech sector where companies are aggressively integrating AI tools into daily workflows while simultaneously reducing headcount. As part of the company’s future roadmap, Evans explained that ClickUp is redesigning its workforce around three categories, “builders,” “system managers,” and “front-liners.” The first two groups will reportedly focus on developing and supervising AI-powered systems while automating parts of their own responsibilities. Employees classified as front-liners, meanwhile, will continue to handle customer interactions and provide what Evans described as “the human touch.” The CEO also stressed the company’s long-term ambition to achieve “100x output” through deeper AI integration. In another social media post, Evans stated, “The people that automate their jobs with AI will always have a job. They become owners of the AI systems – agent managers.” He also attempted to reassure employees and industry observers by saying, “The future is not fewer people. It’s different work, new roles, and better rewards for those who embrace it.” Reports suggest the company has already encouraged staff to actively use AI agents and share AI-based workflows internally as part of its evolving workplace culture.
