Multiple power outages disrupted large parts of San Francisco on Saturday, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without electricity. It also
raised traffic safety concerns across the city. According to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, unplanned outages began in the morning and continued into the afternoon, mainly affecting west and central San Francisco. Neighbourhoods hit included the Presidio, Seacliff, Inner and Outer Richmond, Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle, Inner and Outer Sunset, and parts of West of Twin Peaks. Sections of the Western Addition and Downtown were also affected. PG&E reported that the outages were not planned and did not immediately explain the cause. The first major outage was reported around 9.40 am, cutting power to more than 14,600 residential and commercial customers from the Inner Sunset down to Forest Hill. About 30 minutes later, a second outage began around 10.10 am, affecting the Presidio, the Richmond District, and parts of Market Street. This second outage impacted more than 24,800 customers. Together, over 40,000 customers across San Francisco lost power at different points during the day.
Which Areas Were Affected By Outages?
PG&E’s outage map showed widespread disruptions across west San Francisco. The Presidio and surrounding neighborhoods were among the hardest hit. Power also went out in Inner and Outer Richmond, Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle, and large parts of Inner and Outer Sunset. Areas west of Twin Peaks experienced outages as well, along with sections of the Western Addition and Downtown.

When Will Power Be Restored?
As of Saturday afternoon, PG&E said about 25,000 customers were still without power. The utility estimated that electricity would be restored between 3.30 pm and 3.45 pm for most affected areas. PG&E said crews were working to restore service but did not share details about what caused the outages.
The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management warned that the power failures might affect traffic signals across the city. Officials reminded drivers that intersections with dark traffic lights should be treated as four-way stops. The department continued to monitor the situation as crews worked to bring power back online.
