As powerful earthquakes continue to strike different parts of the world, attention has once again turned to whether countries can warn people before devastating
tremors arrive. In India, scientists stress there is no scientifically proven technology capable of predicting earthquakes before they occur. However, the country has made significant progress in earthquake early warning (EEW) technology that can provide a few crucial seconds of notice after a quake has already begun. India's regional earthquake early warning system has been developed primarily for the seismically active Himalayan belt, where tectonic activity poses one of the country's greatest natural disaster risks. The initiative combines dense seismic sensor networks, rapid data processing and mobile alert systems designed to reduce casualties during major earthquakes. The system does not predict earthquakes days or hours in advance. Instead, it detects the earliest seismic waves immediately after an earthquake begins and sends warnings before the stronger, more destructive shaking reaches nearby cities.
How India's Earthquake Early Warning System Works
The country's most advanced EEW programme has been developed by IIT Roorkee in collaboration with the Government of Uttarakhand, which also introduced the BhuDEV mobile application to deliver real-time alerts to residents. At the national level, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) is simultaneously developing and testing prototype earthquake early warning algorithms capable of rapid P-wave detection, magnitude estimation and ground-shaking prediction using regional seismic data.
When an earthquake occurs, it first releases Primary Waves (P-waves), which travel at the highest speed through the Earth's crust. These waves generally cause little damage but act as an early indicator that a larger seismic event has begun. The slower-moving Secondary Waves (S-waves) and surface waves follow shortly afterwards and are responsible for most structural damage during an earthquake.
India's early warning network is designed to detect the first P-waves near an earthquake's epicentre. Once those waves are identified, the system rapidly calculates the earthquake's location and expected intensity before automatically sending alerts to communities farther away, allowing emergency alarms to be activated before stronger shaking arrives.
Where The System Operates And Its Limitations
The majority of India's earthquake early warning sensors are currently installed across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand, close to active Himalayan fault lines where destructive earthquakes are considered most likely.
Because warning time depends entirely on the distance between the epicentre and the affected location, communities located directly above or very close to the fault may receive little or no warning. Cities situated tens or even hundreds of kilometres away, however, may receive several seconds of advance notice—often enough to stop trains, halt industrial operations, activate emergency systems and allow people to move away from hazardous areas.
The Union Government informed Parliament in December that a dedicated real-time seismic monitoring network for earthquake early warning is being expanded across the Himalayan region, while research continues to improve the speed and reliability of detection algorithms. Globally, countries such as Japan, Taiwan and the United States operate some of the world's most sophisticated earthquake early warning systems, using extensive seismic networks to provide rapid alerts.
