Apart from a better lifestyle, upgraded living conditions, cleaner air and surroundings, and such- another major reason why Indians often move abroad is
the earnings. The gap between Indian currency and the currencies of certain countries plays a huge role in making NRIs feel ‘rich’ when they visit India. All in all, earning in euros, pounds, dollars, and such- and spending them in India is a thing that many enjoy, for obvious reasons. With the same calculation in mind, when THIS NRI visited India, he wanted to ‘flex’ and spend a lot. However, all his mental expenditure figures went down the drain after he realised that India was not ‘cheap’ anymore. Taking to social media, the man stated how he was not supposed to feel ‘gareeb’ in India; however, that is exactly what ended up happening. He then backed his observation with an example, as he stated that he recently had a tea worth Rs 1,000 at a Mumbai hotel. He further stated that Indian “street food, hotels, shopping, nothing feels ‘budget’ anymore”. Further reflecting on the rising expenditure in the country, the man asked Indians about how much money they are earning- to spend this much on a daily basis. The video went viral, gaining many reactions. Most sided with the man, while some advised him not to drink tea at such expensive hotels. “I am an NRI, I was not supposed to feel gareeb in India. We had a deal- the deal was that I come to India, I spend a lot here and go back happily. I just had a tea worth Rs 1,000 at this Mumbai hotel. When I left India, we used to put Rs 1,000 in the stock market– what is happening? I was supposed to come here and flex. How much money do people have here,” the man was heard saying in the clip.

“As an NRI, India was supposed to feel cheap… but 2025 India is giving one more drama. When @zarnagarg said this I felt it really hard! This trip is a reality check. Street food, hotels, shopping, nothing feels ‘budget’ anymore,” the post read.

“Finally someone said it. Prices are skyrocketing in India, that too with dropping quality,” a user said. “Local people spend more without feeling the pinch....but NRIs. They cry a lot,” added a second person.
“Damn true. I have spent more on domestic trips in India than international trips,” added a third person. “Just avoid going to 4-5 star places to drink tea, you will feel normal and try sadak ki chai for less than a dollar and momos!!” advised another.

“So, so true. I worry for the middle class and the poor in India. How do they even get by through the month? Ironically the rich in India are so obnoxiously rich. The difference is stark. And yes, coming to India and spending some time here is not as rosy and affordable anymore,” commented the next netizen.
