What is the story about?
New Delhi: If you are planning to step out early to watch the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path on January 26, some advance planning will save you a lot
of hassle. With early-morning metro services, temporary station closures, traffic restrictions and strict entry timings, Delhi’s morning routine will look very different. Here is a simple, commuter-friendly guide to help you plan your Republic Day outing without confusion.
What Time Does the Republic Day Parade Start?
The Republic Day parade usually begins around 10 am at Kartavya Path. However, spectators are required to reach the venue much earlier. Entry gates typically open before dawn, and authorities advise people to arrive by 5 am or earlier to complete security checks and reach their designated seating areas on time.
Once the security perimeters are sealed, late entry is not allowed, so reaching on time is crucial.
Delhi Metro to Start Services Early at 3 AM
To ensure smooth travel for spectators, Delhi Metro services will begin early at 3:00 am on all lines on Republic Day. This special arrangement has been made to help people reach Kartavya Path and other parts of central Delhi without difficulty.Trains will operate at 15-minute intervals until 6:00 am, after which the regular weekday timetable will be followed for the rest of the day.
All metro station parking facilities will remain open, making park-and-ride a convenient option for commuters.
Metro Stations and Gates That Will Remain Closed
Due to heightened security arrangements, entry and exit at selected metro stations and gates will remain closed on January 23 and January 26, from 3:00 am until the end of the programme. The affected stations and gates are:
- Central Secretariat: Gates 3 and 4
- Udyog Bhawan: Gate 1
- Lal Quila: Gates 3 and 4
- Jama Masjid: Gates 3 and 4
- Delhi Gate: Gates 1, 4 and 5
- ITO: Gates 3, 4 and 6
Commuters are advised to use nearby alternative stations and allow extra time for walking and security checks.
Road Closures and Traffic Restrictions in Central Delhi
As in previous years, traffic restrictions will be in place across central Delhi from the night of January 25. Roads leading to Kartavya Path, Vijay Chowk, India Gate, Raisina Hill and surrounding areas are likely to be closed or diverted.Only vehicles with valid passes will be allowed near the parade route. Delhi Police usually advise residents to avoid central Delhi during the early morning hours unless they are attending the event.
Public transport, especially the Metro, remains the most reliable way to travel on Republic Day morning.
Security Checks and Entry Rules for Spectators
Multi-layered security checks will be in place. Spectators must carry valid identity proof and should avoid bringing prohibited items such as large bags, food packets, power banks, sharp objects and unauthorised electronic devices.Security checks can take time, so reaching the venue early is strongly recommended.
If you are attending the parade, leave home well in advance and rely on the Metro as much as possible. If you are not attending, it is best to delay travel through central Delhi until late morning.
With a little planning, Republic Day morning in Delhi can be smooth rather than stressful.
