What is the story about?
Kolkata: After two days of record-breaking cold across Kolkata and much of south Bengal, residents finally got some relief on Wednesday as dense fog cleared
and sunshine returned. The city had remained gripped by biting cold on Monday and Tuesday, with no sign of the sun and temperatures plunging sharply, leaving daily life severely affected. The return of sunlight on Wednesday made conditions noticeably more comfortable, though the respite is expected to be partial.
Kolkata Weather: Maximum Temperature Jumps by Four Degrees in a Day
According to the India Meteorological Department’s Alipore office, Kolkata recorded a significant rise in daytime temperatures. The maximum temperature climbed by four degrees Celsius in a single day, reaching 22 degrees Celsius at Alipore. Over the previous two days, the city’s maximum temperature had failed to cross the 18-degree mark. At Dum Dum, the maximum temperature was even higher at 23.6 degrees Celsius, signalling a clear improvement in daytime weather.
Fog Eases Across South and North Bengal
The reduction in fog was not limited to Kolkata alone. Several parts of north Bengal also saw clearer skies and a sharp rise in temperatures. Jalpaiguri recorded an increase of around six and a half degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature, which stood at 24.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The easing of fog brought temporary relief across the region after days of harsh winter conditions.Despite the rise in daytime temperatures, the chill has not fully loosened its grip. Kolkata’s minimum temperature on Wednesday was recorded at 10.3 degrees Celsius. While there has been no fresh drop in minimum temperatures across south Bengal, colder pockets continue to persist. In Santiniketan, minimum temperatures hovered between 6.2 and 6.6 degrees Celsius, indicating that nights remain severely cold.
Cold Wave Conditions to Persist in Some Districts
Meteorologists have warned that cold wave and cold day conditions are likely to continue in parts of Birbhum and Purba Bardhaman districts. Even though temperatures have risen temporarily during the day, similar conditions are expected to prevail for at least the next two days in several districts. The weather office has indicated that night temperatures may rise by around two degrees Celsius after three days, suggesting only gradual relief from the ongoing cold spell.
