After waiting for nearly two decades, the long-pending funicular railway at Shri Malanggad (Haji Malang) in Kalyan, Thane, has finally opened. Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kisan Kathore inaugurated the 1.2 km service on Sunday, marking a big moment for devotees and visitors, said media reports. Officials claimed that the new structure will allows pilgrims to reach the shrine within 10 minutes. Earlier, visitors had to climb around 2,600 steep steps, a journey that could take up to two hours on foot. It was a huge challenge for elderly people, children and those with health concerns. The funicular railway will cut down the hassle and ferry pilgrims within minutes with much more comfort and safety.

Officials said the new structure will not only provide a faster commute but also a scenic experience. Devotees will be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the hill without the strain of a long climb, reported The Times of India.

The funicular cabins can accommodate up to 120 passengers. With this capacity, authorities will be able to manage the crowd efficiently, particularly during festival seasons when devotees show up in thousands.
To encourage people to try it out, the rides will be free for the first two days after the launch.
A Long-Awaited Dream
The project was first proposed in 2004 and took almost 13 years to complete. Although finished last year, it awaited all safety clearances before opening to the public.
Apart from easing the journey for pilgrims, the funicular is expected to attract more visitors to Malanggad, benefiting local businesses like guest houses, restaurants, and vendors selling flowers and garlands.
Shri Malanggad, also widely known as the Haji Malang Dargah, is a revered pilgrimage site that draws devotees from all over India. In addition to its spiritual significance, the location is cherished by nature enthusiasts from Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai, who visit to enjoy its scenic surroundings and serene environment.
