The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rain this week. Following a dry spell, the southwest
monsoon has regained momentum, with rainfall expected to intensify from Tuesday (July 21). Very heavy rainfall at isolated locations will be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km/h. Over the past weekend, the city experienced moderate rainfall, with significant amounts recorded in the suburbs. For instance, the Santacruz observatory recorded 88.4 mm of rain, while the Colaba observatory noted only 5.6 mm during the same period. Rainfall was even more pronounced in neighbouring districts, with Thane receiving 115 mm and Navi Mumbai 92.1 mm.
Impact on Water Levels
The recent rainfall has positively impacted water levels in Mumbai's lakes, which now hold approximately 54.05% of their total capacity. This increase is crucial for the city's water supply, although levels remain lower than last year.
Weather experts, including independent forecaster Abhijit Modak, noted that the revival of the monsoon brings typical July conditions, aiding soil moisture and agricultural needs. He said, "The gradual revival of the southwest monsoon is restoring the characteristic monsoon feel across the Konkan region."
Advisory for Residents
Residents are advised to stay alert as the anticipated heavy rain could lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions, particularly in low-lying areas. Commuters should monitor weather updates and follow official IMD advisories during this period.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane for July 22 and 23, indicating continued heavy rainfall in isolated areas.
Notably, July was Mumbai's wettest month, with an average rainfall of approximately 920 mm. This year's rainfall activity marks a return to stronger monsoon conditions after a relatively dry period since July 10. The first week of July saw substantial rainfall, with the Santacruz weather station recording over 1,000 mm due to multiple weather systems.
