Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the opposition Congress of trying to create panic among people while the central government is working
to reduce the impact of global conflicts on the country. Addressing a public meeting in Silchar in Assam, Modi said the world is facing wars and tensions, but India is focused on protecting citizens from their effects. “The world is facing conflicts, and our effort is to reduce their impact on the people of the country,” he said, while accusing Congress of spreading rumours and misleading people. Modi also criticised the party over its protest during the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi last month. He said the protest embarrassed the country at a time when global leaders and major technology companies had gathered to discuss artificial intelligence.
The PM also attacked Congress for what he said was its long neglect of the Northeast. According to him, the region did not receive enough attention or development when the party was in power for decades.
He said areas like the Barak Valley were weakened after Independence and remained underdeveloped for years. Modi added that his government is now focusing on improving infrastructure and economic opportunities in the region.
During the event, Modi unveiled projects worth more than Rs 23,500 crore in Assam. One of the key projects is a 166-km four-lane expressway between Silchar and Shillong in Meghalaya. Officials said the new highway will reduce the travel distance between Guwahati and Silchar and cut travel time from about eight and a half hours to around five hours.
He also laid the foundation for an elevated corridor on National Highway-306 in Silchar to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity with nearby states such as Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur.
Another project launched during the visit is a new agriculture college in Patharkandi in Karimganj district.
Officials said these projects are part of development initiatives worth about Rs 47,800 crore announced by the prime minister in Assam during his visit.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal were also present at the event.
