Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the US sanctions law targeting Russia, said, India would first examine its details before discussing
the matter. “The details are now emerging. We will study them and discuss the matter at an appropriate time,” Goyal said while addressing the reporters. Notably, US President Donald Trump has signed the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law on September 18. The legislation expands sanctions on Russia and gives the US President the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that continue significant purchases of Russian energy. The 100 percent tariff is not an automatic duty but it is a maximum tariff that the US President could impose under the new law. India remained a major importer of Russian crude oil. India and the US continue to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement, with both sides remaining in regular contact on the pact.
