Thane: In a shocking and tragic incident, a young man lost both his legs after falling from a moving local train during a mobile snatching attempt. The
incident took place between Shahad and Ambivli stations, leaving commuters and authorities alarmed over rising cases of theft and safety concerns in local trains. The victim has been identified as Gaurav Nikam, a regular commuter. According to preliminary reports, Gaurav was standing at the door of a moving local train on the Central Railway line when an unidentified thief snatched his mobile phone. In a desperate attempt to hold on or resist, Gaurav lost his balance and fell off the train. He landed on the tracks and was severely injured—his legs were crushed under the train, leading to life-changing injuries. Eyewitnesses on the train immediately informed railway officials and emergency services. Gaurav was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, where doctors confirmed that both his legs had suffered irreparable damage. He is currently undergoing treatment and remains under close medical supervision. This incident has once again raised serious questions about commuter safety, especially during peak hours when crowds surge near the train doors. Many passengers habitually stand near open doors due to overcrowding, making them vulnerable to accidents and crimes like chain or mobile snatching. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have launched an investigation into the incident and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby stations to identify the accused. Authorities have also appealed to passengers to stay vigilant and avoid standing at the edge of train doors, particularly while using mobile phones. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked outrage on social media, with citizens demanding stricter security measures and better policing to curb such crimes on Mumbai’s lifeline the local trains.
