New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the alleged police crackdown on students, accusing Union
Home Minister Amit Shah of avoiding Parliament because he was "scared" to explain the "brutal violence" against protesters. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha also shared a video on X showing police lathi-charging students. Calling for an independent inquiry, Gandhi said, "Students deserve justice. An independent SC-monitored high powered committee must be constituted to probe brutalities against our students." He was referring to the police action during the July 20 Cockroach Janta Party-led march to Parliament and the crackdown on student protesters in other parts of the country. In another post on X, Gandhi questioned Shah's silence over the issue.

"Why is Amit Shah so scared?" Gandhi asked, alleging that the Home Minister was avoiding Parliament instead of explaining the alleged police action against students.

A day earlier, Gandhi had demanded Shah's removal from the Union Cabinet and sought a Supreme Court-monitored probe into what he described as a "brutal attack" on protesting students, including the alleged use of pellet guns.
The former Congress president alleged that if Shah had ordered the "brutalities" against students, "he is culpable," and that if the Home Minister was unaware of the alleged use of pellet guns, "he is incompetenet".
The BJP rejected Gandhi's allegations, accusing him of telling a "bundle of lies" and demanding that he apologise for "misusing" the Lok Sabha by making "baseless" allegations.
Gandhi had first made the allegations in the Lok Sabha during a debate on the Bill proposing stricter punishment for paper leaks. He accused Shah of being responsible for the alleged police excesses and firing on student protesters, triggering protests from treasury bench MPs.
Several of Gandhi's remarks were later expunged by the Speaker. However, the Congress leader repeated the allegations outside Parliament and renewed his demand for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.
